The Minneapolis Edit

Hey friends, this week’s edition is simple and spacious.

One untethered reflection that’s been on my heart lately, and a practical guide for getting through the bleak mid-winter with a little more ease.

Pour something warm. Take your time. 💗

A Note on Feeling Untethered

On home, roots, and learning that two things can be true at the same time.

A year and a half ago, I sold my house during a life transition. Job loss, one daughter leaving for college. Both things meaning a downsize and a bigger nest egg would do me good.

Yesterday, I found myself on the phone with my sister trying to name this feeling I've been sitting with. Untethered. My needs are taken care of, at the same time, owning a home feels like security in a way renting doesn't. Roots go down. Neighbors stay longer. Community grows deeper. And though a part of me wants to cringe at this admission (given all the work I've done around surrender and letting go), there's more under my control when I own... like playing my sappy indie folk a little too loud at midnight. Or the ability to paint the walls hot pink on a whim.

I've also noticed this: people waiting to buy a house often put other parts of life on hold while they're waiting to put roots down. Like they're suspending joy until they have the "right" keys in hand.

If I'm learning one thing in the last few years it's that two things can be true at the same time. I can root down deeply in self and Source and truth and Love and community exactly where I am, even in a place I don't own. And when I do own a place again, it will likely just deepen my sense of security and belonging.

And that deepening is a part of what the soul of a home is. It's more than just a roof over our heads. It's what happens under it and what happens in us when we feel truly at home. You know this. You've felt it. Or maybe you've felt the ache of leaving it behind.

All that being said, I'm turning a corner. I'm on the front end of hunting for my next haven right now and let me confirm … it's nerve-wracking! Even for someone who does this for a living. Which is exactly why I know how much the right people on your team matter. See exhibit A: yesterday I talked with my loan officer and learned about a loan program that makes a duplex purchase an amazing opportunity. Something that aligns perfectly with my short-term goal to buy and my long-term goal to invest. Who knows how it will all unfold, but I'm learning about options I didn't know I had!

If you’ve thought about buying, meeting with a loan officer is the first step (no matter what you think you are or aren’t qualified for). They’ll either get your pre-approved or show you the path to get there.

However home finds you next, I hope it gives you permission to play the music too loud. And if you're living in the between, may you feel more deeply rooted right where you are.

If you're thinking about buying or selling, whether that's next month or three years from now, I'm here. For you, your friends, your family.

XO,
Jen

Como Zoo Conservatory - truly evergreen.

Besides taking a long nap in a winter hat (which I fully support), there are ways to enjoy mid-winter in Minnesota. I rounded up a handful of ideas … some practical, some ridiculous, all mood-boosting!
