The Minneapolis Edit

Hiya,
I'm writing this while sitting at Brim (highly recommend) and refreshing the forecast like it owes me money. If you haven't heard, there's a storm system eyeing Saturday night into Sunday that could bring some real snow to the metro.
Honestly, I’m only mad(ish) about it. If the snow wins this weekend, my bae and I will be sledding (if the hills cooperate), playing pinochle, and listening to records on vinyl. No, we are not both 90. (OK, maybe a little.) We all know that sometimes the best Twin Cities weekend is the one spent hunkering down in your living room with someone you love, a good playlist, and nowhere to be. So if you need permission to cancel plans and build a puzzle, consider this it.
But before you decide to hibernate, there is a packed weekend ahead AND a story I've been following closely that I want to walk you through. Mayor Frey vetoed the eviction notice extension yesterday, and what's unfolding is more nuanced than any headline is going to give you. More on that below.
First, let's talk about what's happening this weekend.
The Essentials

A family-friendly fundraiser with a raffle, silent auction, on-site tattooing (it IS Friday the 13th, after all), kids crafts, music, and more. The kind of event that reminds you why this city shows up for its people.

🎸 Free St. Paddy's Party with 4onthefloor
📍 HeadFlyer Brewing | 861 E Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55414 🗓 Saturday, March 14 | 7–11 PM 🎟 Free
Local favorites 4onthefloor bring the high-energy rock and roll to HeadFlyer for a free show. If there's anyone who can get the good times going, it's these guys. No ticket needed, just show up ready.

🍀 58th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade
📍 Nicollet Mall | 6th St to 12th St, Downtown Minneapolis 🗓 Saturday, March 14 | 1 PM 🎟 Free
The annual parade rolls through downtown with floats, Irish dancers, and plenty of shamrock spirit. Bundle up — Saturday's looking cold with highs in the mid-30s. Grab a spot curbside and lean into it.
Feature Story
Frey Vetoed the Eviction Extension. 13 Nonprofits Agreed With Him. It's Complicated.
It's not tenants vs. landlords. It's everyone vs. a broken system.

Last week I wrote about the $15.7 million rental shortfall facing Minneapolis in the wake of Operation Metro Surge. That piece landed the same day the City Council voted 7-5 to extend the eviction notice period from 30 days to 60 days through August. The question at the time: would Mayor Frey sign it?
Yesterday, we got our answer. He vetoed it.
And then he made a move that could be a smart alternative… he proposed an additional $1 million in emergency rental assistance, on top of the $1 million the Council already approved in February. His argument: rental assistance gets money directly to families, while extending timelines just pushes people deeper into debt.
I know that's going to land differently depending on where you sit. So I want to walk through this the way I see it, as someone who works in real estate, talks to landlords, and also believes deeply that housing is a human right.
Because terrible puns are a public service
THIS WEEK'S BAD JOKES
🍀 Why can't you iron a four-leaf clover? Because you shouldn't press your luck.
