Minneapolis, Neighborhood by Neighborhood

Why February 18 matters for local restaurants — and how to reinvest in the city one meal at a time.

Did you know Minneapolis is organized into 11 communities made up of 83 distinct neighborhoods?

That structure was born in 1990 when the city launched the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP)—a $400 million, 20-year, resident-led initiative funded through downtown tax increment financing. Instead of imposing top-down solutions, neighborhoods drafted their own Action Plans for housing, safety, economic development, and small business support.

Residents set the priorities. The city funded the plans.

It was one of the most ambitious community-driven urban revitalization efforts in the country, and it shaped the Minneapolis we know today.

But neighborhoods aren't static. They're living ecosystems.

In recent years, local businesses have faced immense strain. After Operation Metro Surge alone, Minneapolis businesses took an estimated $203M hit. Recovery doesn't happen all at once—it happens locally. One dinner reservation. One coffee order. One neighborhood at a time. Which makes this week especially meaningful.

The Salt Cure Restaurant Recovery Fund Announced February 18 is National Day of Giving for Minnesota Restaurants.

I (along with so many local’s input) curated 100+ of the best restaurants in each of these communities on a google map. This link below will be live and updated frequently!

  • If you're local: Dine out or order from a neighborhood favorite. Check out the map below.

Falling For Minnesota

9 Reasons We Fall

The Door Hold.
They see you.
You are 47 feet away.
They hold the door anyway.

Now you’re fake-jogging like you’re late for a flight just to reduce the awkwardness. When you finally arrive? You might get a hug.

Community Settings: MAX.
They will:

  • Take the neighbor’s kid to school

  • Watch your dog

  • Bring you groceries

  • And organize a meal train

All before asking what you need.
Crisis? We built an underground human hive in about 12 minutes.

“MN Nice.”
They call us Minnesota Nice.
Which usually just means… we’re not a$$holes.

But if you try to hurt our kids, family, or neighbors?
The gloves come off.

Even in -40.
Especially in -40.

Culinary Identity.
We’ve evolved.
We compost.
We read labels.

But casseroles and hot dish still run the government.

Wild Behavior.
We smile at strangers.
Make eye contact.
Wish them a good day.

Unprovoked.

Seasonal Delusion.
They wear Birkenstocks in almost any weather.
40+ degrees? “It’s basically summer.”
Snow on the ground? “My feet run warm.”

Language Glitches.
“Ope.”
“Uffda.”
“Bayge.” (Not beige. Bayge.)

We don’t say these.
They just… escape.

The Goodbye.
Minnesotan goodbyes are an endurance sport.

You say, “We should get going.”
We say, “Yeah…”
Then proceed to stand fully dressed in coats and shoes for 32 more minutes while launching into 10 separate exit conversations.

We will say goodbye in:

  • The kitchen

  • The doorway

  • The driveway

  • Through the car window

We are never emotionally prepared.

The Zipper Merge Crisis.
We want to be good at the zipper merge.
We’ve read the articles.
We understand the concept.

And yet it’s still:
“No you go.”
“No, you.”
“No YOOOU.”

Traffic backed up for three counties.

Because terrible puns are a public service
